Bringing our community together in a fun and creative way is probably the best way to get people talking and laughing. Peawanuck is a small Cree community on the Hudson Bay Coast where everyone knows one another. When it comes to community events, contests, and cookouts, everyone comes together. It’s a day for everyone to socialize, participate in the activities, and simply just to enjoy themselves.

Every end of the summer, (right before the high school and post-secondary students leave for school), we have a community cookout. The Brighter Futures Youth Program is usually the main organizer of this event and gets assisted by the community’s frontline workers and volunteers.

Because we have been doing this for a long time, most organizers take the time to make this a successful cookout and provide a variety of activities for everyone. It is our very own community event where everyone knows when it happens and where it’s going to be located. In other words, it’s our own community holiday.

This year, I was in charge of the Brighter Futures Youth Program and inspired by the TLC show Cake Boss I decided to organize a Cake Contest on the day of the community cookout. Little did I know, I would get more than a handful of cakes on the tables. There were 15 participants and all of them had awesome cakes! The cake contest was a success. There were three categories: Most Creative Cake, Most Decorative Cake, and Funniest Cake. All winners received cash prizes. It was a great way to bring our community members together to talk and laugh.
