My name is Robinson Hudson. I am a band member of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation and currently attending Queen Elizabeth District High School in Sioux Lookout, Ont. I am also a self-taught photographer and a co-op student for Wawatay in the newspaper department. I chose Wawatay News as my co-op placement because it’s a great place to meet and work with other successful Aboriginal people.
I want to gain a better understanding and first-hand experience in a field that includes photography.
Photography has been a passion of mine since my mid-teens. I started capturing photos about four years ago, when I was 16 years old, with a ‘point and shoot’ Canon camera taking shots of landscape, macro and action. When I began taking photographs as a teen, my main focus was to capture the mesmerizing beauty of nature landscapes and attempt to capture those precious moments in life that are seen on a daily basis.
As the months progressed and comments began to grow on how well the photos were turning out I asked my father, David Hudson, to buy me a Nikon D80 SLR camera while attending a conference in Winnipeg, Man. It was then that I truly began teaching myself what there is to know about photography and the fundamentals of art and design.
I recently realized that as you become a better photographer and get caught up in learning the latest tricks, it’s easy to forget what originally inspired you to learn photography. I will be taking my hobby to the next level this fall by attending Fanshawe College in London, Ont., to study photography for two to three years. I hope to make a career in some aspect of photography.
Photography has changed the way I see the world. If anyone wants to get into photography, don’t hesitate to grab the camera and take pictures every day of anything that is interesting to you! The best part of having a hobby such as photography is never running out of things to learn. Inspiration is all around you! Look at everything with the eyes of a photographer and you’ll see opportunities you never noticed before.
