My name is Jason Smallboy and I am from Moose Cree First Nation in Moose Factory, Ont. I am 26 years old and I am a member of the NAN Decade for Youth Council. I currently work with the Mushkegowuk Tribal Council as youth coordinator. I have lived in Moose Factory for most of my life but have also lived in various cities in southern Ontario.
I have been involved in working with and for youth for over 10 years now. I began volunteering for young people in my community while in high school and have been involved ever since. I have worked in various positions involving youth including sitting on chief and council as the youth councillor.
I firmly believe in the potential of our young people. I see it every day in the determination and aspirations of our youth and their goal to make a difference. I believe that everyone has the potential to make a positive change for his or her community or even the region.
I encourage all young people to get involved with their community at any level, whether it be political by starting your own youth council, or by volunteering for community events. It is through these types of actions that we all can make a difference and provide a healthier environment for future generations. It is the natural highs that we should focus on and lean away from the substances that cloud our minds, hearts and souls.
I believe the youth of today are more aware of what is going on in the world than any other generation that came before. With the advancement of technology and communications, it is easier than ever to access information from anywhere and the ability to communicate with each other is astonishing. It is through technology that we hope to bridge the gap between our communities within the NAN territory to work together for our fellow youth.
I agree that we as youth have a lot of challenges ahead of us, but if we work together towards a common goal, the sky’s the limit.
