An Elder’s Mind

An Elder’s mind, knowledge, stories and courage
are like a priceless ruby.
Gleaming in the sunlight.
Held up high to be treasured and understood.
Shown to others to teach,
told by stages to clarify.
An Elder’s mind is clean, pure, unfamished and respectful
Just like prayers sent to the Creator
through the smoke of our sacred tobacco.
We must respect our elders for one day they will guide us
On our rocky, trail full of hardships,
Lakes full of sadness, they help us swim across it;
Give us strength.
Give us wisdom.
Give us our own pride; give us our own self respect.
An Elder’s mind deserves to be heard,
for they already finished their journey,
Conquered the trail
that could knock you down.
Their stories will teach us
How to get back up on our own;
Their stories, their voice, their minds are like a
Precious jewel of many colours,
Held up at an angle; through the warm, bright rays of the sun,
It will shine many colours of grace, of beauty.
Give it some thought, in time it will guide your way.
Just listen,
Listen to their words and soon your mind
Will be that precious jewel,
Helping others,
Being respected.
An Elder’s mind will soon one day be yours
If you choose to listen to their advice.
They want to live a bright, warm life.
Respect them, listen to them, understand them.
